How long have you been training in Taekwondo? And what got you started?

I have been involved in Taekwondo for over 20 years.  Mum and Dad encouraged me to get started at the age of 15 years.

Highlights of your Taekwondo success?

  • Achieving my black belt promotion.
  • Winning a few tournaments in my younger years.
  • Having the opportunity to train with my daughters.

Describe your first black belt grading, and what it took to get you there?

I had been training for many years prior to my black belt grading however the 12 months prior was much more intense. I was training 3 days a week with my instructor as well as training at home perfecting my patterns and technique.

I focused on improving my cardio and general fitness. I would often go for a run and I would do hundreds of push ups and sit ups every week to improve my core strength.  I stretched after every session to improve my flexibility.

During my grading I demonstrated all patterns required. I demonstrated 1 step sparring as well as removing myself from various locks and holds. I was required to spar multiple senior belts. I broke multiple boards including a 4 board break demonstrating 4 different techniques. This was to simulate being surrounded by 4 people. I also broke roof tiles with a stomp as well as palm strike.

Although physically exhausted the feeling of receiving my first black belt was overwhelming.

How often do you train? In Taekwondo? Gym? etc

I train with United Taekwondo two nights a week and often train on the weekend in the backyard perfecting my techniques.

I also enjoy running and attend a park run on a Saturday morning with my sister as well as training in the gym twice a week to improve strength.

Favourite Taekwondo move or moves?

Without a doubt my favourite move would be the spinning heel kick.

What are your personal goals in Taekwondo?

I wish to assist my daughters achieve their black belts in Taekwondo and I look forward to standing beside them the day they do.

Has Taekwondo benefited home life? If so, in what way?

Yes absolutely. Having a common interest brings us closer. We train together in class and at home. My youngest looks up to me as an instructor.

Your favourite saying and what this means?

“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams, live the life you have imagined.”

You can achieve whatever your mind believes. Live the life you wish to live.

Best advice you can give someone training and wishing to start training in Taekwondo?

Just enjoy training, have fun and don’t put too much pressure on promotions.

What other activities apart from Taekwondo do you enjoy?

I enjoy doing mud runs. I often compete in Tough Mudder and Spartan races.  I also enjoy spending time with my family.

 Favourite movie(s) and why?

I am a huge Marvel and DC fan and enjoy any movie associated. I guess I’m a big kid at heart.

Favourite food?

Roast dinners are my favourite.

With regards to Taekwondo where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years?

In 5 years I hope to have grown the Oran Park branch and having watched many students improve and better themselves over this time.

In 10 years I hope to be regarded as a significant contributor to our sport.
