Instructor John Cadornigara

3rd Dan Black Belt

St George NSW Region – Carlton South Dojang
How long have you been training in Taekwondo? And what got you started?

My two boys and I joined United Taekwondo in Sept 2012. It is my desire that my boys should learn martial arts, and to be specific I want them to learn taekwondo. I was raised by a military background family in the Philippines and I cannot adopt the military discipline I have grown up to with my boys. That is why martial arts is the best discipline I can provide them to build their confidence, develop their self-discipline and learn to show respect.

Highlights of your Taekwondo success?

Seeing my boys pursue their training and grade for their black belts. This has been a huge success to me.

Describe your first black belt grading, and what it took to get you there?

My first dan black belt grading was a real experience I cannot forget. I showed my determination to achieve my goal and to be ready for the next stage of my training.

How often do you train? In Taekwondo? Gym? Etc?

We regularly attend Monday and Wednesday training at Carlton. During Saturday morning my boys and I do some exercise and training at Dolls Point beach.

I do go to the gym but not regularly, only if I have some spare time.

When I wake up in the morning I do Tai-Chi to improve my balance and blood circulation.

Favourite Taekwondo move or moves?

My favourite combination moves are side kick / hook kick going to jumping back kick, but I really need more time to perfect this move, or just to come close to perfection.

What are your personal goals in Taekwondo?

My personal goal is to share the health benefits and self-defence skills to every child and adult who want to practice the art of Taekwondo.

Your favourite saying and what this means?

FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION – It is the design philosophy of a Roman Architect Marcus Vitruvius Pollio and later this phrase was coined by an American morenist Architect Louise Sullivan –  “This means that the purpose of a building should be the starting point for its design

Adopting this phrase in Taekwondo – every form that our body created has it’s intended purpose to make an action.

Best advice you can give someone training or wishing to start training in Taekwondo?

My best advice to someone training in taekwondo is to have perseverance with their goals and to those wishing to join, I may say they will never regret the benefits to their self in practicing martial arts.

What other activities apart from Taekwondo do you enjoy?

I am in a tenpin bowling tournament every Saturday evening and I love to play guitar and jamming with my 2 boys during our spare time.

Favourite movie(s) and why?

Indiana Jones – I love adventure and discovering old and new things ( ideas).

Favourite food?

All Filipino dishes with vegetables.

With regards to Taekwondo where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years?

In 5 years times I see myself teaching and practicing Taekwondo.
In 10 years time I still see myself teaching and practicing Taekwondo.
