Branch Instructor
Instructor Steven Greene
3rd Dan Black Belt
FNQ Region – Redlynch Dojang
How long have you been training in Taekwondo? And what got you started?
It is hard to say how long I’ve been training as I had some time away from Taekwondo, but I started training in 1997 with Chief Instructor Brett at his Farrer Dojang in the ACT.
I always had an interest in martial arts growing up, I got my hands on every martial arts movie I could and watched them over and over again.
Highlights of your Taekwondo success?
The training. A promotion is the culmination of both physical and mental training. When I am in that serious training phase I just love it; the pain, struggle, success and results.
Most of my success has come through students. Being trusted with their development and guiding them on their path is highly rewarding. Watching them exceed their own expectations and grow with confidence is amazing.
Describe your first black belt grading, and what it took to get you there?
My first black belt grading was nerve racking. I had seen many before and thought I’d be alright, but pressure does funny things to a person when they’re not used to it. The training was intense and a lot of the barriers I’d put up for myself got taken down by Chief Instructor Brett along the way.
Chief Instructor Lachlan also gave my ribs a few nice mementos, which I enjoyed for a month or two post grading.
How often do you train? In Taekwondo? Gym? etc
Nominally, I will train twice a week in Taekwondo along with two gym sessions.
Favourite Taekwondo move or moves?
It has to be a front kick in some form of combo. It is quick, simple, can be done off the front or back foot. I have been known to throw in the odd ridge-hand too.
What are your personal goals in Taekwondo?
Be the best I can be, knowing that this may be different from day-to-day.
Has Taekwondo benefited home life? If so in what way?
I think Taekwondo gives you an opportunity to disconnect and focus on yourself, which in turn lets you re-charge and be more present at home.
Doesn’t hurt to know a few moves when you’re fighting for the last piece of chocolate either.
Your favourite saying and what this means?
“The belt doesn’t make the person, the person makes the belt”
Your belt does not define who you are, ultimately, you are defined by your actions. The belt means nothing if you are not humble and help others.
“You are your only limit”
The only thing stopping you from achieving something is you.
“Get to the chopper”
This one needs no explanation.
Best advice you can give someone training and wishing to start training in Taekwondo?
Just go! Pick a class, show up, have a chat with the Instructor and give it a go.
There is no fitness, coordination or age requirement. Everyone has to start somewhere and the best time is always now.
What other activities apart from Taekwondo do you enjoy?
Spending time with the family, camping, reading and catching up with friends.
Favourite movie(s) and why?
Anything Marvel universe, but particularly Deadpool. Anything with Jackie Chan, Donnie Yen or Tony Jaa in it. Of course, Kung Fu Panda has to get a mention.
Favourite food?
All of them!
With regards to Taekwondo where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years?
Hopefully still taller and with more hair than Chief Instructor Brett.
