Chief Instructor

Instructor Lachlan Cooper

5th Dan Black Belt

Darwin NT Region – Tivendale Dojang
How long have you been training in Taekwondo? And what got you started?

I have been training now for over 25 years. My dad and mum got me into it because I was constantly running around punching and kicking everything.

Highlights of your Taekwondo success?

My first dan grading was definitely a highlight because I feel that’s when I really started to understand Taekwondo. Also, moving to Wagga and starting a region that is having so much success.

How often do you train in Taekwondo, gym etc?

I take classes 5 nights a week and I train for about an hour before each class. I also study Aikido two days a week and get to the gym when I can. I don’t have a lot of interests outside of martial arts mainly because I don’t have time.

Favourite Taekwondo move or moves?

Crescent kick to axe kick, lunging front kick and reverse punch.

Describe your first black belt grading and what it took to get you there?

I remember training 4-5 nights a week. My instructor (Chief Instructor Brett Canning) kept me motivated and put me through some tough training. Training for your black belt requires you to make some sacrifices so that you can do the training required. I was the only black belt to grade that weekend in Canberra so all the focus was on me and there were plenty of black belts there to spar me and give me plenty of encouragement. It was a great day that I will always remember.

What are your goals in Taekwondo?

My main aim is to have over 100 students and continue my training and get that 10 board punch I keep busting my hand on.

What would you like to see more of or less of in United Taekwondo that could benefit members?

I would love to see more families training.

Best advice you can give someone training and wishing to start training in Taekwondo?

Listen to your instructor and always give 100%.

Your favourite saying and what this means?

PAIN IS JUST WEAKNESS LEAVING THE BODY.

It means that you should push yourself, the human body is capable of amazing things.

Has Taekwondo benefited home life? If so in what way?

I’m not ever home long enough to find out. But I’m sure my parents would have great things to say about all the training I did and how it benefited me.

What other activities apart from Taekwondo do you enjoy?

Aikido and the odd drink at Xmas

Favourite movie(s) and why?

Anchorman, because Will Farrell cracks me up.

Favourite food?

Pizza or a big steak

With regards to Taekwondo where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years?

Still instructing and making a difference in peoples lives and helping United Taekwondo expand all across Australia and surrounding areas.
