Master Paul Mitchell – Professional Biography
Master Paul Mitchell is one of Australia’s most respected martial arts leaders, educators, and community advocates, whose life’s work has been dedicated to transforming individuals, strengthening families, and building safer communities through the principles of martial arts.
With almost five decades of experience in Taekwondo, Master Paul began his journey in the early 1980s under the banner of Rhee Taekwon-Do, earning his 1st Dan Black Belt in 1983. From the outset, his commitment extended beyond personal achievement. He immersed himself in teaching, mentoring, and leading, rising to senior instructor level and overseeing multiple centres and hundreds of students. His early career established him as both a technically skilled martial artist and a deeply committed mentor who understood that true mastery lies in developing people, not just practitioners.
In 2006, Master Paul faced one of the most defining challenges of his life. After dedicating 27 years to one organisation, he was unexpectedly dismissed, despite overseeing nine locations and more than 300 students. At the same time, he endured profound personal hardship, including the loss of his mother after an eight-year battle with dementia. For many, this combination of professional and personal adversity would have marked an end. For Master Paul, it became a turning point.
Guided by his father’s enduring words “Life will test you, challenge you, shake you or break you, but how strong you stand will make you”, he chose to stand strong. With the unwavering support of his wife Kay, and with eight centres and 225 students choosing to follow his philosophy, he founded United Taekwondo with a clear and powerful mission: Building People Not Fighters™.
From those humble beginnings, Master Paul has grown United Taekwondo into a nationally recognised organisation spanning more than 35 locations across Australia, supporting over 1,500 active students and thousands more through school and community programs. Under his leadership, the organisation has maintained an exceptional culture, reflected in a 90% instructor retention rate and a network of more than 150 black belts developed under his guidance.
What distinguishes Master Paul is not just the scale of his organisation, but the depth of its purpose. His programs directly address some of Australia’s most pressing social challenges, including bullying, youth disengagement, and declining self-confidence. Inspired by research highlighting over one million bullying incidents occurring weekly in Australian schools, he embedded anti-bullying strategies, resilience training, and leadership development into every aspect of his curriculum. His work empowers young people to stand strong without violence, building confidence, empathy, and accountability.
Master Paul’s impact extends far beyond the training floor. Through United Taekwondo, he has led and supported numerous charitable and community initiatives, demonstrating a lifelong commitment to giving back:
· Raised over $5,500 for the Cancer Council through community training initiatives
· Contributed $4,000 to children battling cancer through the “Fit for Life” event
· Supported Lifeline with $2,400 in donations to assist mental health services
· Raised over $5,000 through the Longest Day golfing campaign for cancer research
· Provided ongoing support to Helping Hearts Sydney through donations of food, clothing, and essential items
· Contributed to international aid by raising funds to build housing for orphaned children in Thailand
· Supported youth crime prevention through the PCYC “Doing Time to Stop Youth Crime” fundraiser
· Delivered community demonstrations and events for schools, councils, Lions Clubs, and cultural celebrations
Beyond financial contributions, Master Paul believes true service is demonstrated through personal acts of kindness. Whether sending a signed sports jersey to a child undergoing cancer treatment or providing free training and gradings for families facing financial hardship, his actions consistently reflect compassion in practice.
His commitment to education and personal development is further demonstrated through his authorship of Building People Not Fighters and Self Confidence – The Martial Arts Way. These works provide parents and communities with practical tools to support children’s mental wellbeing, resilience, and self-belief. Every new member of his organisation receives structured onboarding support, ensuring that no individual is left without guidance during their development journey.
Master Paul has also played a significant leadership role within the broader martial arts industry. Since his induction into the Australasian Martial Arts Hall of Fame in 2008, he has contributed as an event organiser and leader, delivering record-breaking national events in Sydney, Adelaide, and Canberra. These events have not only celebrated excellence but have strengthened unity and recognition within the Australian martial arts community.
In recognition of his lifelong contribution, Master Paul was promoted to 7th Degree Master Instructor in 2023 and awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award for over 45 years of service. His leadership has also been acknowledged through multiple business and industry awards, including Australian Small Business Champion Awards, Outstanding Health & Fitness Awards, and national finalist recognitions.
Earlier in his career, Master Paul made a profound impact through the Active After-School Community Program, delivering martial arts-based confidence and anti-bullying programs to more than 7,000 children across 250 locations. His excellence in this space saw him recognised as the number one coach in NSW/ACT out of 3,500 coaches and later ranked in the top 10 nationally.
At the heart of Master Paul Mitchell’s journey is a simple but powerful belief: that martial arts is a vehicle for positive change. His leadership philosophy is grounded in integrity, resilience, humility, and service. He has consistently demonstrated that success is not measured by titles or financial gain, but by the lives impacted and the communities strengthened.
Today, his legacy is evident in the confident children, empowered families, and inspired instructors who carry forward his values. Through adversity, he has built purpose. Through purpose, he has created impact. And through that impact, Master Paul Mitchell continues to shape a better future for Australian communities.
Master Paul Mitchell is not only a master of martial arts, but a master in building people, uplifting communities, and creating lasting change.
